Virginia Retirement System
RENOVATION | TWO FLOORS | RICHMOND, VA
The new headquarters for the Virginia Retirement System (VRS) reflects a long-standing partnership built on trust, responsiveness, and a shared commitment to creating thoughtful workplace experiences that support the future of work.
Located just across the street from MOI’s Richmond showroom, VRS has partnered with MOI on multiple projects over the years. For this two-floor workplace transformation, VRS again selected MOI through a no-bid engagement — a reflection of the confidence established through years of successful collaboration. Working alongside design partner Wendel, as well as LF Jennings and JLL, the project team moved quickly to deliver a highly functional and design-forward environment under an accelerated timeline.
From the beginning, the client and design team trusted MOI to help shape the furniture strategy holistically — from workstation planning to finish palettes, fabrics, ancillary selections, and boardroom solutions. That level of collaboration allowed the team to move decisively while maintaining a cohesive aesthetic throughout the space. The workplace supports a hybrid style of work with a thoughtful mix of private offices, workstations, collaboration spaces, conference rooms, and hospitality-inspired amenity areas. Knoll workstations paired with Herman Miller accessories provide flexibility and functionality for day-to-day operations, while Herman Miller Headway tables with Global seating support meeting and conferencing spaces throughout the office.
One of the most impactful spaces within the project is the executive boardroom, featuring fully custom DatesWeiser solutions delivered under an aggressive schedule to ensure readiness for the organization’s first board meeting in the new space. When unexpected construction delays threatened the project timeline, MOI worked proactively to provide supplemental seating and expedited solutions so the client could remain operational and meeting-ready without compromise.
Throughout the space, ancillary furniture from Davis and soft seating selections with bold, unexpected fabrics introduce warmth and personality uncommon in traditional government environments. In the café and dining spaces, Source seating and custom Venue Industries banquettes create welcoming destinations that encourage connection and collaboration throughout the workday. Private offices were strategically designed with three standardized options based on role and function, all unified through a consistent finish palette that reinforces cohesion across the workplace while supporting varying levels of privacy and leadership needs.
Despite the compressed schedule and construction-related challenges, the project was completed successfully through constant communication, rapid problem-solving, and a willingness from all partners to stay flexible under pressure. MOI worked closely with VRS to evaluate every available path forward — including expedited installation options versus potential lease delays — ultimately helping the client meet their critical occupancy timeline.
The success of this project continues a long-standing relationship between MOI and VRS, with additional refresh projects already underway. Leveraging state contract purchasing capabilities and deep institutional knowledge of the client’s standards and goals, MOI remains a trusted partner in helping VRS evolve its workplace for the future.
