Goode Family Works on Paper Center

RENOVATION | NORFOLK, VA

Conference Room

MOI partnered with the WPA to furnish the Goode Family Works on Paper Center, a transformation designed to expand access to one of the museum’s most significant collections while maintaining the strict requirements of preservation and study.

In a setting where attention must remain on the artwork, every element needed to be intentional and unobtrusive. The furniture was selected to create a quiet, focused environment that allows visitors, scholars, and students to engage deeply with the collection without distraction, while also meeting the durability and performance needs of a conservation-sensitive space.

At the same time, the space needed to adapt. The study room serves individual researchers, small groups, and instructional sessions, requiring flexibility without adding complexity. MOI provided solutions that allow the room to shift easily between these uses, supporting both independent study and collaborative learning while maintaining a cohesive, refined aesthetic aligned with the architectural vision.

The broader goal of the project was to bring typically hidden works into a more accessible, educational setting. MOI’s contribution reinforces that mission by ensuring the furniture supports both the experience and the operation of the space. The result is an environment that feels simple and intuitive, but is carefully considered to balance accessibility, performance, and respect for the collection.

This project reflects a core principle: when furniture is thoughtfully integrated, it doesn’t compete for attention- it enables the experience.
