Girl Scouts Nation’s Capital

RENOVATION | 10,400SF | WASHINGTON, DC

20251008 Kelleher Girl Scouts 04 2

MOI partnered with Girl Scouts Nation’s Capital to reimagine their 10,400 SF Washington, DC headquarters—delivering a highly functional, budget-conscious workplace that better supports the people behind the mission.

With a relationship spanning more than 15 years, MOI brought deep institutional knowledge to the project, having supported multiple reconfigurations across this and several regional offices. When new leadership set out to modernize the space, the challenge was clear: create a more private, efficient work environment without exceeding a tight budget.

The solution was a thoughtful shift from a fully open plan to a balanced mix of private offices and workstations. MOI introduced a modified benching approach using freestanding height-adjustable tables paired with privacy screens—delivering the functionality and comfort of traditional panel systems at a significantly lower cost. Existing assets were strategically reused, including conference tables, seating, and storage, while additional product already located within the building was repurposed into the new design.

Sustainability played a key role in the project. Through a partnership with Installnet and MillerKnoll’s rePurpose program, MOI facilitated a responsible decommissioning process that prioritized reuse, donation, and recycling. Items were redistributed to organizations including Prince George’s County School District, Arundel Lodge Behavioral Health, Hospice of the Chesapeake, and Dragonfly Acres Farm.

This effort resulted in measurable environmental impact, including approximately 66.45 metric tons of CO₂ emissions reduced, along with additional savings generated through recycling credits returned to the client. Beyond sustainability, these efforts reinforced a broader goal: extending the life and value of resources while supporting the surrounding community.

Using MillerKnoll solutions via the Herman Miller Omnia contract, along with SitOnIt seating, the final space is clean, efficient, and purpose-built- designed to perform where it matters most.

By creating a workplace that better supports staff—through privacy, flexibility, and thoughtful resource allocation, this project ultimately supports the people who support Girl Scouts. The result is a space that works harder, lasts longer, and aligns directly with the organization’s mission.
